Fritillaria raddeana is a striking and elegant spring bloomer that has been beloved by enthusiasts of unusual flower bulbs since its introduction in 1909. This special fritillaria originates from Afghanistan, northeastern Iran, and southeastern Turkey and is closely related to the well-known Fritillaria imperialis. Thanks to its unique flower shape and soft coloration, it makes a refined addition to any spring garden.
The plant has glossy green, tapering leaves that grow alternately along the sturdy flower stalk to just below the inflorescence. At the top, multiple star-shaped, hanging flowers appear, positioned almost horizontally relative to the stalk. The flowers have a beautiful primrose-yellow color with a subtle soft green sheen, creating a natural and elegant appearance. Flowering occurs in April and May and, thanks to the open flower shape, also attracts bees and butterflies.
Fritillaria raddeana grows excellently in a location in full sun or partial shade. Plant the bulbs at a depth of approximately 15 cm with a spacing of 20 to 25 cm between them. For a rich flowering result, approximately 20 bulbs per m² are recommended. This species is suitable for naturalizing and can also be planted mechanically. Depending on the application, this fritillaria is of limited suitability as a cut flower and is sometimes suitable for pots.
With its delicate yellow flowers and exotic appearance, Fritillaria raddeana is a fantastic choice for borders, natural gardens, and lovers of exclusive spring bloomers.
