Fritillaria uva-vulpis, also known in the Netherlands as the fox grape, is a charming and easy-to-grow spring bloomer with a sophisticated appearance. This special fritillaria was introduced in 1974 and originates from eastern Turkey, northern Iraq, and western Iran. Thanks to its compact size, striking color combination, and vigorous growth, it is a popular choice for borders, rock gardens, and natural plantings.
The plant forms a slender flower stalk about 25 cm high, enveloped by a few narrow, glossy green leaves. In April, the graceful, bell-shaped flowers appear, hanging elegantly downwards. The flowers have a deep purplish color with a subtle green tinge, while the tips of the petals and the throat turn a beautiful golden yellow. This unique combination of purple and yellow gives the plant an exotic and playful appearance.
Fritillaria uva-vulpis is fragrant but highly decorative. The flowers are suitable as small cut flowers, but if left on the plant, beautiful seed pods develop that provide ornamental value for a long time. Furthermore, this species is known as one of the easiest fritillarias to grow, making it very suitable for novice gardeners.
This fritillaria grows best in full sun or partial shade and is excellent for naturalizing. Additionally, the species can be planted mechanically, making it interesting for larger planting projects.
With its elegant flowers, compact growth, and easy care, the Fritillaria uva-vulpis is a beautiful addition to any spring garden.
