Fritillaria michailovskyi is a unique botanical fritillaria with a refined and exotic appearance. This special species was first discovered and described by Mikhailovsky in 1904 and originates from northeastern Turkey, primarily around Lake Van and the Kars region. Thanks to its striking flower color and compact growth habit, this fritillaria is beloved by enthusiasts of unusual bulbs and rock gardens.
The elegant flowers appear in April and feature a striking color combination of reddish-purple with an artful golden-yellow edge along the petals. The yellow throat of the flower provides additional contrast and gives the plant a warm, almost Oriental appearance. Up to eight hanging, bell-shaped flowers can appear per stem, adding extra ornamental value to this species.
Fritillaria michailovskyi grows best in a sunny to partially shaded location in well-drained soil. This botanical species comes into its own particularly beautifully in a somewhat shaded rock garden or natural border. The narrow, slightly elliptical leaves enhance the refined character of the plant.
This fritillaria is excellently suited for naturalizing and can also be used effectively in pots or planters. Due to its compact form and abundant flowering, the plant is ideal for smaller gardens, rock gardens, and raised borders. Additionally, Fritillaria michailovskyi fits perfectly into natural plantings with other botanical flower bulbs.
Plant the bulbs in the autumn at a depth of approximately 10 cm with a spacing of 10 to 15 cm between them. For a nice, full effect, plant approximately 100 bulbs per square meter.
