Fritillaria imperialis 'Rubra' is a spectacular crown imperial and the deepest red cultivar in our range. This imposing spring-flowering bulb is known for its powerful appearance, sturdy flower stalks, and striking bell-shaped flowers in a rich red hue. The flowers hang gracefully in a cluster beneath a prominent crest of green bracts, creating the characteristic crown-shaped effect from which the crown imperial derives its name.
The strong stems are covered up to about two-thirds with elegant whorls of glossy green leaves, giving the plant decorative value even before flowering. Fritillaria imperialis 'Rubra' blooms in April and May and is a real eye-catcher in borders and planting beds. The intense red color combines beautifully with yellow and orange spring bloomers or with graceful perennials.
In addition to its ornamental value, this crown imperial is also popular for its well-known repellent effect against moles and other rodents. Furthermore, the plant is deer-resistant. The flowers emit a distinctive fragrance and are suitable as cut flowers, allowing you to enjoy this special sight indoors as well.
For optimal growth, plant the bulbs in the autumn in a sunny or partially shaded location in well-draining soil. Due to the hollow at the top of the bulb, we recommend planting them horizontally. This allows excess water to drain away more effectively and reduces the risk of bulb rot in wet soil. Use a planting distance of 20 to 25 cm and plant the bulbs approximately 10 to 15 cm deep.
