Fritillaria meleagris Mixture, better known as the checkered lily, is an elegant and natural spring bloomer that has been cultivated since 1573. This special stinzen plant occurs naturally throughout almost all of Europe and grows in the Netherlands, among other places, along the floodplains of the IJssel, near Hasselt, and around the Reeuwijkse Plassen. Thanks to its refined appearance and excellent naturalizing properties, this Fritillaria is popular in natural gardens, borders, and grasslands.
The slender flower stalks usually bear one elegant bell-shaped flower per stalk, but when the plants have been in the same spot for years, multiple flowers may appear per stalk. The flowers vary from white to deep purple and often display a beautiful speckled or block-shaped pattern. This unique pattern gives the fritillary its characteristic and decorative appearance.
Fritillaria meleagris Mixture blooms in April and May and thrives best in a sunny to partially shaded location in moist, well-drained soil. Due to its compact height and natural growth habit, this species is particularly suitable for naturalizing in grass, under trees, or along ponds. The fritillary also looks excellent in pots.
Plant the bulbs in the autumn at a depth of approximately 10 cm and maintain a planting distance of 10 to 15 cm. For a richly flowering carpet, plant approximately 100 bulbs per square meter. Furthermore, the flowers attract bees and butterflies, contributing to a vibrant and biodiverse garden.
