Fritillaria imperialis 'Lutea', better known as the crown imperial, is an impressive spring-flowering bulbous plant with a stately and exotic appearance. This special Fritillaria is known for its sturdy flower stalks and striking trumpet-shaped flowers in a bright yellow color. The flowers hang gracefully beneath a characteristic crown of green leaves, giving the plant its regal appearance.
The strong flower stalk features narrow, glossy, and tapering leaves that lend the plant extra elegance. With a height of approximately 90 to 100 cm, Fritillaria imperialis 'Lutea' is a real eye-catcher in borders and planting beds. Flowering occurs in April and May, allowing this crown imperial to bring color and structure to the spring garden.
Fritillaria imperialis originates from areas ranging from Turkey to Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Kashmir Mountains. As a result, the plant has a distinct botanical character and an exotic appearance that combines beautifully with tulips, alliums, and other spring bloomers.
In addition to its ornamental value, 'Lutea' is also practical to use. The plant is deer- and rodent-resistant and emits a distinctive fragrance. Furthermore, the flowers are suitable as cut flowers, allowing you to enjoy this impressive sight indoors as well.
Plant the bulbs in the autumn in a sunny or partially shaded location in well-draining soil. Use a planting distance of 20 to 25 cm and a planting depth of approximately 10 to 15 cm. For a nice, full effect, plant about 20 bulbs per square meter.
