Pisum sativum (Sugar pea) 'Norli' BIO is an early and high-yielding sugar pea known for its sturdy, compact plants and tender, small pods. This organic variety combines excellent yields with exceptional flavor, making it a favorite for home gardeners and organic vegetable gardens. Norli produces pods that are particularly tender and high in sugar, making them ideal for direct consumption or culinary applications such as Asian stir-fries and light salads.
Its early harvest time, high yield and robust nature make Norli a reliable choice for anyone who wants to grow tasty peas with minimal effort.
Norli grows compactly and robustly to a height of approximately 50–60 cm, making the plants manageable and easy to support. Despite their compact size, the stems are strong enough to carry the numerous small pods.
The small, tender pods are green and juicy, with a sweet flavor that's noticeable almost immediately upon tasting. Regular harvesting keeps the plants productive and continuously produces new pods. This makes Norli ideal for gardeners who want a long harvest period with a constant supply of fresh pods.
A key advantage of Norli is its resistance to Fusarium wilt, which makes this variety more resistant to fungal diseases and more reliable in diverse growing conditions.
Norli can be sown from late March to late May in a sunny location with well-drained soil. For optimal yield, the variety is sown thinly in rows, giving the seeds ample space to develop.
Sowing advice:
Row spacing: 30–40 cm
Distance in the row: 4–5 cm
Sowing depth: approx. 3–5 cm
Norli is ideal for mixed cultivation with cabbage, radishes, or early potatoes, creating a varied, healthy vegetable garden. Avoid growing it next to onions, as this can reduce yield. Like other peas, Norli requires little to no additional fertilizer, thanks to its natural nitrogen-fixing capacity.
Norli harvest begins a few weeks after sowing. For the best flavor, the pods are picked young and continuously, before the peas are fully formed. This results in sweet, juicy pods that are ideal for a variety of dishes. Once fully ripe, the pods can be used as "marsh peas," a traditional way to preserve and process peas for longer.
Culinary applications:
Fresh from the pod as a healthy snack
Lightly steamed or blanched with hot dishes
Ideal for Asian stir-fries
Add to salads, risotto or pasta
Blanch and freeze for later use
Due to their high sugar content, the pods are particularly aromatic and retain their sweet flavour well when boiled or steamed.
