Description

Pisum sativum (Sugar pea) 'Ambrosia' BIO – highly productive sugar pea for fresh consumption

Pisum sativum (Sugar pea) 'Ambrosia' BIO is a high-yielding sugar pea variety loved for its sweet, juicy pods and versatile culinary uses. This organic variety combines reliable yields with compact, manageable growth, making it ideal for both home gardeners and organic vegetable growers. Ambrosia produces medium-sized, light green pods that are deliciously sweet when picked young and can be eaten with the pods still on. Once the peas grow larger, they can also be used like regular garden peas, making Ambrosia exceptionally versatile.

Appearance and growth characteristics

Ambrosia grows to a height of approximately 70 cm and forms sturdy, upright plants. The medium-sized, light green pods appear in large numbers and are uniform in shape, making harvesting easy. Due to the high number of pods per plant, Ambrosia produces an exceptionally high yield, ideal for fresh consumption and freezing.

The compact height makes the variety manageable and suitable for smaller plots, raised beds or even vegetable garden pots, while the robust stems carry the weight of the pods well.

Cultivation information and sowing

Ambrosia can be sown from March onwards, in both single and double rows. For optimal cultivation, the following sowing advice applies:

Sowing advice:

  • Distance in the row: approximately 3 cm between the seeds

  • Sowing depth: approximately 3 cm

  • Row spacing: depending on the cultivation method, single or double rows

This variety combines well with cabbage, radishes, or early potatoes in mixed crops, allowing you to create a varied, healthy vegetable garden. Avoid growing it next to onions, as these plants can negatively impact each other's growth. Peas have natural nitrogen-fixing properties, requiring little to no additional fertilizer.

Harvest and use in the kitchen

Ambrosia is known for its fast-growing, sweet pods. The young pods can be eaten whole, including the skin, making them ideal for fresh consumption, in salads, or as a light vegetable in hot dishes. Once fully ripe, the peas can be used like regular peas, making this variety versatile throughout the growing season.

Culinary applications:

  • Fresh from the pod as a healthy snack

  • Lightly steamed or boiled as a side dish

  • In stir-fries, salads or pastas

  • Blanch and freeze for later consumption

The combination of flavor, sweetness, and productivity makes Ambrosia a favorite in both home and organic vegetable gardens.
