Description

Pisum sativum (Pea) 'Radim' – robust, large-seeded and high-yielding pea

Pisum sativum (Pea) 'Radim' is a vigorous and reliable pea variety that excels in both production and flavor. This large-seeded variety produces firm, dark green pods filled with 8–10 large, tender peas, making it an excellent choice for both home gardeners and commercial growers. Radim combines high-yielding qualities with robustness, making it an ideal variety for a consistent, abundant harvest during the summer months.

Thanks to its compact yet vigorous growth, Radim offers an excellent yield per square meter and is suitable for a variety of growing conditions, from traditional vegetable gardens to larger plots.

Appearance and growth characteristics

Radim grows vigorously and reaches a height of approximately 60–70 cm, which remains manageable but requires support. A simple climbing structure, such as stakes, mesh, or netting, helps the plants remain upright and makes harvesting easier.

The long, dark green pods are striking for their color and size. They contain an average of 8 to 10 large peas that are aromatic, sweet, and tender, ideal for immediate consumption or use in dishes. The sturdy stems and abundant blooms ensure continuous development of new pods, allowing for optimal harvesting.

Cultivation and sowing information

Radim is an early to mid-season variety that responds well to regular, sunny conditions. For the best yield, it's recommended to sow the peas thinly in rows. The sowing season runs from April to June, depending on local conditions.

Sowing advice:

  • Row spacing: 30–40 cm

  • Distance in the row: approx. 4–5 cm

  • Sowing depth: 3–5 cm

Radim generally requires little to no fertilizer, as peas naturally fix nitrogen in the soil through their root nodules. Overfertilization can lead to excessive leaf growth and reduced pod development.

Due to their vigorous, robust growth, it's recommended to lightly earth up the plants at a height of 10–15 cm for added stability and a strong root system. This helps support the heavy pods during harvest.

Harvest and culinary uses

The Radim harvest period runs from late June to August, depending on sowing time. The large seeds and dark green pods make it easy to determine when they're ready to pick.

Culinary applications:

  • Fresh from the pod as a healthy snack

  • Boiled or steamed as a side dish

  • Add to salads, stir-fries and soups

  • Blanch lightly and freeze for later use

The large, tender peas retain their flavour excellently, both fresh and frozen, making Radim also suitable for sustainable, long-term cultivation.
