Phaseolus vulgaris Stanley is a high-quality and flavorful bush bean loved for its fine, stringless pods and compact growth. This so-called “gourmet bean” produces slender, dark green beans with excellent taste and a refined texture. Thanks to its sturdy, upright growth, this variety is particularly suitable for open ground as well as raised beds and smaller vegetable gardens.
Stanley bean pods are approximately 12 to 13 cm long and have a beautiful, dark green color. They are completely stringless, which means they are easy to use in the kitchen and offer a pleasant eating experience. The flavor is mild, full, and aromatic, making this bean ideal for various dishes. Whether you boil, steam, stir-fry, or incorporate them into salads – Stanley always delivers excellent quality.
What makes this variety particularly attractive is its compact and upright growth. The plants only grow to about 50 cm tall, making them very stable. As a result, support is not necessary, and they are particularly suitable for growing in raised beds or smaller gardens. This bean is also an excellent choice for novice gardeners due to its simple maintenance.
The harvest period of Phaseolus vulgaris Stanley runs from July to October. By sowing again every two weeks, you can significantly extend the harvest period and enjoy fresh beans for a long time. This makes this variety particularly flexible and productive.
Growing the Stanley is simple and can be done via both pre-sowing and direct sowing. From mid-April, you can start pre-sowing indoors in pots. This helps prevent damage from the bean fly and gives the plants a head start. From May to July, the seeds can be sown directly in the open ground.
There are two possible sowing methods: row sowing and headland sowing. With row sowing, a distance of 8 to 10 cm is maintained between the plants in the row and 40 cm between the rows. With headland sowing, groups of 4 to 5 seeds are sown at a distance of approximately 40 x 30 cm. Both methods yield good results, depending on the available space and preference.
Beans generally require little fertilization because they fix nitrogen from the air, thereby enriching the soil. This makes them a sustainable choice for the vegetable garden. However, it is important to prevent waterlogging, as beans are sensitive to wet conditions. Therefore, ensure well-draining soil and avoid tilling wet soil.
For optimal growth, it is recommended to lightly earth up the plants later on. This increases stability and promotes healthy development. Additionally, regular watering during dry periods helps maintain a good yield.
The Phaseolus vulgaris Stanley is not only suitable for fresh consumption but is also excellent for freezing. This allows you to enjoy your own harvest even out of season.
In short, the Phaseolus vulgaris Stanley is a compact, productive, and particularly tasty bush bean that fits perfectly in any vegetable garden. With its fine, stringless pods and long harvest period, this is an ideal choice for anyone who wants to enjoy fresh, top-quality beans from their own garden.
