The young fruits can be eaten.
They are a specialty in Asian cuisine.
When fully mature, the familiar sponges, about 50cm long, can be harvested in the fall after the plants have died back.
Planting distance in the row: 30 cm, between the rows: approximately 120 cm.
Sow seeds from late February. Transplant in a greenhouse or outdoors from May.
The plants grow best on a climbing frame.
