Celosia is a striking annual flower with velvety, brightly colored blooms in unique shapes, such as panicles and combs. Ideal as a cut flower, it adds long-lasting color and texture to any bouquet.
Celosia argentea var. cristata (Cock's Comb): It has brain-like, frizzled inflorescences that are dense and velvety, making them stand out in flower arrangements.
Celosia argentea var. plumosa (Plume Celosia): Displays feathery, plume-like flowers that add height and texture to bouquets and arrangements.
Celosia argentea var. spicata (Spike Celosia or Wheat Celosia): Resembling wheat spikes, it lends a more understated and elegant look to refined floral designs.
Climate: Celosia thrives in warm climates and is sensitive to frost. Provide consistently warm temperatures for optimal growth.
Soil: Prefers well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Enriching the soil with organic matter improves its structure and fertility.
Sunlight: Celosia needs full sun to develop its vibrant colors and vigorous growth. Make sure the plants receive at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.
Sow indoors from March onwards in a warm, bright environment (around 20°C). Prick out the seedlings and transplant them outdoors after the last frost. In theory, you can also sow directly outdoors, but pre-germinating indoors yields much better results in our climate.
Generally hardy, but can be susceptible to aphids or mold if overly moist.
Absolutely! Celosia retains its color and shape beautifully when dried. Hang the flowers upside down in a dry, dark place. Hang the stems upside down in small bunches in a warm, dark place. After 2–3 weeks, they will be dry and ready to use.
