Description

Eremurus isabellinus 'Cleopatra' – Spectacular Orange Candle

Eremurus isabellinus 'Cleopatra' is one of the most impressive ornamental plants for the summer garden. This spectacular candle plant was introduced in 1956 by NC Ruiter and belongs to the well-known Ruiter hybrids. Thanks to its striking color, impressive height, and distinctive flower shape, Cleopatra has become one of the most popular Eremurus varieties for borders and landscape plantings.

The plant forms a stately, plume-shaped flower spike consisting of more than a hundred star-shaped florets. The flowers have a warm apricot-orange to soft orange color and are accentuated on the outside by a striking dark red vein. The stamens are also orange-colored, creating a harmonious whole. In the bud stage, the plant displays a deep dark orange color, giving it considerable ornamental value even before flowering.

During the flowering period in June and July, the flower stalk rises like a rocket from the border. With a height of approximately 125 centimeters, Eremurus Cleopatra creates a powerful vertical accent in the garden. The elegant flower spike immediately catches the eye and forms a beautiful contrast with lower perennials and ornamental grasses.

For optimal growth, plant the large, spider-shaped rhizome in a sunny location in well-draining soil. Dig a shallow planting hole approximately 10 to 15 centimeters deep and wider than the roots. A layer of coarse gravel or sharp sand under the roots helps drain excess moisture. Place the central growing point just below the soil surface and maintain a planting distance of 30 to 40 centimeters.

Eremurus Cleopatra is excellently suited as a cut flower and can also naturalize, meaning the plant returns year after year. With its spectacular flowers and architectural appearance, this candle plant makes a true statement piece for any sunny border.
