Eremurus himalaicus, better known as Cleopatra's Needle, is an impressive perennial that forms a true eye-catcher in any garden thanks to its spectacular inflorescence. The plant produces a striking, rocket-shaped flower spike that rises high above the surrounding vegetation. The pure white flowers are densely packed on a long flower stalk that can reach a total height of up to two meters. The flower spike itself typically grows to 80 to 90 centimeters in length and provides a majestic appearance in borders and natural plantings.
This special species originates from the northwestern part of the Himalayas and grows naturally in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Kashmir. There, Eremurus himalaicus occurs in mountain meadows up to an altitude of approximately 3,600 meters. In its natural habitat, the plant is protected by a thick layer of snow during the winter. Although this species is virtually winter-hardy in the Netherlands, it is recommended to provide the plant with extra protection during severe winters using a layer of leaves, straw, or other insulating material.
Eremurus himalaicus flowers in June and July and thrives best in a sunny to lightly shaded location. Well-drained, fertile, and preferably dry soil is essential for healthy growth. Plant the roots at a depth of 10 to 15 centimeters and maintain a planting distance of 30 to 40 centimeters. For a beautiful effect, approximately five plants per square meter are recommended.
Thanks to its long, elegant flower stalks, Eremurus himalaicus is also excellently suited as a cut flower. Additionally, under favorable conditions, this species can naturalize, returning year after year. With its stately growth habit and pure white flowers, Cleopatra's Needle is an exclusive sight that adds structure, height, and elegance to any garden.
