Astrantia major 'Primadonna' is a particularly attractive perennial that stands out for its elegant, dark pinkish-red flowers. This profusely flowering cultivar of the well-known Masterwort brings color and sophistication to the garden from early summer well into the summer. The characteristic flowers consist of a compact flower center surrounded by graceful bracts, giving them an almost star-shaped appearance.
Astrantia 'Primadonna' reaches a height of approximately 60 to 70 cm and forms sturdy, upright flower stalks above the fresh green, palmate leaves. The plant comes into its own perfectly in a perennial border, natural garden, woodland garden, or cottage garden. This Astrantia also creates an atmospheric ensemble when combined with ornamental grasses, ferns, geraniums, hostas, and other shade-loving perennials.
Preferably plant Astrantia major 'Primadonna' in a spot with partial shade or sun, in humus-rich, nutritious soil that remains sufficiently moist. Especially in sunny locations, it is important that the soil does not dry out too much. Once well established, Astrantia major is a strong, hardy perennial that returns year after year.
Moreover, the flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinating insects. By regularly removing faded flowers, the plant can be encouraged to produce new flowers. The flower stalks are also suitable as cut flowers and give bouquets a natural, romantic look.
