Asarina scandens, better known in the Netherlands as the climbing snapdragon, is a particularly profusely flowering annual climber that provides gardens, pergolas, and terraces with color and elegance for months. With its rapid growth, long flowering period, and graceful flowers, this charming climber is a popular choice among garden enthusiasts looking for a decorative and easy-to-grow summer plant.
The trailing stems of Asarina scandens can effortlessly reach a height of 2 to 2.5 meters in a single season. From June until the first frost, beautiful tubular flowers with a distinctive mouth shape appear continuously, strongly reminiscent of small snapdragons. Thanks to its airy growth habit and refined appearance, Asarina is ideal for covering trellises, mesh panels, pergolas, obelisks, and balcony railings.
Although Asarina scandens may be somewhat slow to get going after sowing, this changes completely as soon as temperatures rise. In summer, this climbing plant develops rapidly into a vigorous grower that can cover a wall, fence, or trellis with fresh green foliage and countless flowers in a short time.
Flowering usually begins in June and continues deep into autumn. Even when the first cold nights arrive, the snapdragon often continues to provide color in the garden for a surprisingly long time. As a result, Asarina scandens is one of the last profusely flowering climbing plants of the season.
The graceful flowers of Asarina scandens have a striking trumpet or mouth shape that strongly resembles small snapdragons. The flowers appear abundantly among the fresh green foliage and attract plenty of bees and butterflies. As a result, this plant contributes not only to a colorful garden but also to biodiversity.
With its romantic and natural appearance, the climbing snapdragon fits perfectly in cottage gardens, country gardens, and natural plantings. In modern gardens, too, its airy growth habit creates a playful and elegant effect.
Asarina scandens thrives in a sunny to semi-shady location. The plant develops best and produces the most flowers in a warm, sheltered spot. Thanks to its versatility, this climbing plant can be grown both in the ground and in large pots or containers.
On terraces and balconies, Asarina provides a green and colorful partition when guided along a trellis or wire structure. Due to its trailing growth, it takes up little space while still creating a lush effect.
Snapdragon is easy to grow from seed yourself. Sow Asarina scandens indoors from early March in a warm spot behind glass. Because it is a light germinator, the seeds should only be covered very lightly or even left almost uncovered.
After germination, the young plants initially grow slowly, but as soon as it gets warmer, growth accelerates significantly. In May, after the risk of night frost has passed, the plants can be planted outdoors.
Although Asarina scandens is officially cultivated as an annual, it sometimes proves surprisingly hardy in mild winters. In sheltered spots, the plant can occasionally survive the winter and sprout again the following season. Because of this, it is sometimes considered semi-hardy.
Even light night frost at the end of the season often barely bothers this hardy climbing plant. While many summer flowers are already disappearing, the snapdragon often remains standing tall with colorful flowers.
