Allium siculum ssp. siculum (or ssp. bulgaricum) is a striking and elegant ornamental onion with a very distinctive appearance. This special species was introduced as early as 1873 and originates from a large area around the Mediterranean and West Asia, including Southern France, Sicily, Sardinia, Southern Italy, Northern Iraq, Southeast Turkey, and Western Iran. Thanks to its graceful nodding flowers and natural charm, this allium is a beloved plant for borders and naturalizing.
The plant reaches a height of approximately 80 centimeters and forms sturdy, upright flower stalks. In May and June, the distinctive inflorescences appear; they have a loose, airy structure and grow to about fifteen centimeters wide. Each inflorescence consists of twenty to thirty bell-shaped flowers that hang gracefully downwards on dark flower stalks about ten centimeters long. This elegant hanging form gives the plant a refined and almost exotic appearance.
The flowers have a very special color combination. The overlapping petals are purplish-red to reddish-brown with a broad creamy-white edge and a subtle green tinge. As they fade, the flowers change posture and slowly straighten upwards. As a result, the plant takes on a different character each time during the flowering period, which further enhances its ornamental value.
Allium siculum ssp. siculum grows well in a sunny location but also tolerates light partial shade. The bulbs are planted about ten centimeters deep with a planting distance of approximately fifteen centimeters. For a natural and abundant flowering effect, about one hundred bulbs per square meter are recommended. The plant is resistant to deer and rodents and is also suitable for naturalization.
Although the flowers are not fragrant, they attract many bees and butterflies and contribute to a lively garden. Additionally, the flower stalks are particularly decorative as dried flowers. With its unique bell-shaped flowers, elegant posture, and distinctive coloration, Allium siculum ssp. siculum is a valuable and characterful ornamental onion for any garden.
