Allium 'Globemaster' is one of the most impressive ornamental onions for the border and is known for its enormous violet-purple flowers and powerful appearance. This special cultivar originated in 1959 when Mr. J. Bijl crossed the species Allium macleanii and Allium christophii. From the seedlings, two famous cultivars were eventually selected: Allium 'Beau Regard' and Allium 'Globemaster'. 'Globemaster', in particular, immediately stood out due to its exceptionally large, glossy leaves and spectacular flower heads with a diameter of up to 25 centimeters.
The large, spherical flowers consist of hundreds of small, star-shaped florets in a beautiful aster-violet color. Flowering begins in June and often continues into July. Thanks to the sturdy flower stalks and long-lasting bloom, this ornamental onion is an absolute eye-catcher in borders and prairie gardens. Even after flowering, the flower heads retain their decorative value for a long time. Allium 'Globemaster' is also excellent as a cut flower and is widely used in floral arrangements due to its striking shape and long vase life.
This ornamental onion grows best in a sunny location but also tolerates light partial shade. The bulbs are planted about 15 centimeters deep with a planting distance of approximately 25 centimeters. For a beautiful, full effect, an average of twenty bulbs per square meter is recommended. The plant is resistant to deer and rodents, making it particularly suitable for natural gardens and country borders.
Although the flowers are not fragrant, they attract plenty of bees and butterflies. As a result, Allium 'Globemaster' makes a significant contribution to biodiversity in the garden. The cultivar is less suitable for naturalizing or pot planting, but forms a true eye-catcher in perennial borders. With its imposing size, vigorous growth, and stunning purple flowers, Allium 'Globemaster' is one of the most beloved ornamental onions in the world.
