Allium schubertii is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular and special ornamental onions in existence. This striking species was introduced in 1896 and originates from the eastern Mediterranean to Central Asia. Thanks to its whimsical flower shape and exceptional appearance, Allium schubertii is often regarded as a true work of art within the plant kingdom. The plant immediately attracts attention and forms a real eye-catcher in borders, rock gardens, and container plantings.

The plant reaches a height of approximately 40 to 45 centimeters and forms sturdy flower stalks on which an impressive spherical inflorescence appears. The inflorescences can reach a diameter of as much as 30 centimeters and consist of about 200 light pink flowers. What makes this allium so unique is the playful and explosive structure of the flowers. The hermaphrodite flowers are about four centimeters long, while the male flowers stand on flower stalks sometimes as long as twenty centimeters. Allium schubertii blooms in May and June and grows best in a sunny location, although light partial shade is also tolerated. The bulbs are planted about 15 centimeters deep with a spacing of approximately 25 centimeters between them. For a beautiful effect, an average of twenty bulbs per square meter is recommended. The plant is resistant to deer and rodents and also attracts many bees and butterflies.

Although the flowers are not fragrant, they possess enormous decorative value. Allium schubertii is suitable as a cut flower, but especially as a dried flower of exceptional quality. The characteristic flower heads retain their shape for a long time and are widely used in dried bouquets and decorative arrangements.
