Description

Allium lusitanicum is an elegant and versatile ornamental onion that was formerly known as Allium senescens var. montanum. Nowadays, this plant is considered a separate species and regarded as the European form of Allium senescens. Its natural range extends from Ukraine to northern Portugal, where the plant grows in sunny, dry locations. Thanks to its vigorous growth and long-lasting ornamental value, Allium lusitanicum is a popular plant for borders, rock gardens, and natural plantings.

This fast-growing species forms compact clumps with narrow, linear grey-green foliage that remains decorative throughout the entire growing season. The leaves have an elegant, slightly curved shape and ensure a neat appearance in the garden even outside the flowering period. In July and August, the semi-spherical inflorescences appear, richly filled with dozens of small flowers in a soft lilac-pink color. The flowers have strikingly protruding stamens, giving the plant an airy and playful look.

Allium lusitanicum attracts many bees and butterflies, thereby making a valuable contribution to biodiversity in the garden. Although the flowers are not fragrant, they are frequently visited by pollinating insects. Furthermore, the plant is resistant to deer and rodents, making it suitable for natural and country gardens as well.

This ornamental onion grows best in a sunny location but also tolerates light partial shade. The bulbs are planted about five centimeters deep with a spacing of approximately ten centimeters between them. For a rich flowering result, about sixty bulbs per square meter are recommended. Allium lusitanicum is suitable for naturalizing and, under favorable conditions, can slowly spread into beautiful flowering clumps. Due to its compact growth habit, long-lasting ornamental value, and abundant summer bloom, this species is ideal for borders, rock gardens, and prairie-style plantings. It is a low-maintenance plant that provides color and vibrancy in the garden for years.
