Description

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) 'Gigantomo': One of the Largest and Most Impressive Beefsteak Tomatoes in the World

The Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) 'Gigantomo' lives up to its name. This spectacular tomato variety is known as one of the largest tomatoes in the world and is an absolute eye-catcher in any vegetable garden or greenhouse. With its flattened, round, intensely red beefsteak tomatoes that can weigh up to 1200 grams in good conditions, Gigantomo is a dream for fans of giant varieties and for gardeners looking for a tomato with both size and flavor.

Gigantic size, surprisingly good taste

While many extremely large tomatoes sometimes compromise on flavor, Gigantomo certainly doesn't. This tomato combines its impressive size with a distinct, full tomato flavor. The flesh is thick, juicy, and meaty, with a pleasant balance of sweet and sour.

The fruits are flattened and round, lightly ribbed, and deep red when fully ripe. In specialized cultivation and with optimal care, experienced growers can even produce larger specimens than the already impressive 1200 grams.

  • Very tasty and aromatic

  • Indeterminate growth

Growth and cultivation characteristics

Gigantomo is a vigorous vine tomato with strong growth. The plant grows continuously and develops heavy clusters of very large fruits. Therefore, good support is essential. Not only the plant itself, but also the individual fruits sometimes require additional support to prevent breaking or falling.

The plant thrives in a greenhouse, where warmth and shelter contribute to maximum fruit size. Outdoor cultivation is also possible in warm, sunny, and sheltered locations.

Cultivation advice:

  • Sowing: February – March (pre-sowing)

  • Planting out: From April in the greenhouse, from mid-May outside

  • Location: Sunny, warm and sheltered from the wind

  • Soil: Very nutritious, humus-rich and deeply loosened

  • Support: Absolutely necessary (sticks, rope, fruit supports)

  • Care: Regularly pinch, lead and fertilize

For optimal fruit size, experienced growers recommend allowing only one or two fruits per truss to develop. This allows the plant to focus its energy entirely on developing truly gigantic tomatoes.

Harvest and use in the kitchen

Gigantomo is a mid-late tomato. Harvest begins when the fruits are fully red and yield slightly to gentle pressure. Because of their size, one or two fruits are often enough for a complete meal.

Culinary applications:

  • Perfect for salads in large slices

  • Ideal for sandwiches and burgers

  • Suitable for sauces and soups

  • Excellent for grilling or baking

  • Popular in competitions and show cultivation

The large amount of flesh and the good taste make Gigantomo surprisingly versatile in the kitchen.

Note

Indeterminate (trailing) and requires support. Due to the extreme weight of the fruit, it's essential to provide additional support not only to the main stem but also to the individual fruit clusters (e.g., with netting or additional tying material) to prevent the branches from breaking off. To achieve an abundant and healthy harvest, it's essential to regularly remove side shoots (suckers).
