Description

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) 'German Gold' BIO: Large yellow-red beefsteak tomato with a rich, sweet flavor

The Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) 'German Gold' BIO is an impressive organic beefsteak tomato known for its very large, flattened, round fruits and exceptionally full and juicy flavor. This traditional variety is prized by lovers of authentic tomatoes and is a perfect fit for organic gardens or greenhouses. Thanks to its striking yellow color with red flame markings, German Gold BIO is not only flavorful but also a real eye-catcher.

Appearance and taste: a true tomato specialty

German Gold BIO produces large to very large tomatoes, often considerably larger than standard beefsteak tomatoes. The fruits are yellow with reddish-orange flames, creating a warm, summery appearance. The flesh is thick, meaty, and juicy, with relatively few seeds.

The flavor is what truly sets this tomato apart: soft, sweet, and rich, with a subtle fruity aroma and little acidity. This makes German Gold Organic a favorite among gourmets and ideal for fresh consumption.

Key Features:

  • Very large organic beefsteak tomato

  • Yellow and red flamed fruits

  • Flat-round and lightly ribbed

  • Very meaty and juicy flesh

  • Excellent, mild and sweet taste

  • Indeterminate, vigorous growth

  • Suitable for greenhouse and sheltered cultivation

Growth and cultivation characteristics

German Gold BIO is a vigorously growing vine tomato with a plant height of approximately 200 cm. Due to its vigorous growth and heavy fruit weight, good support is essential. Use sturdy tomato stakes, spirals, or string.

Protected cultivation is strongly recommended for this variety. German Gold BIO develops optimally in a greenhouse, tunnel, or under plastic and can reach its full potential. Outdoor cultivation is also possible in warm, sheltered locations, but protection from rain significantly increases the chance of a successful harvest.

Cultivation advice:

  • Sowing: February – March (indoors or in a greenhouse)

  • Planting out: From April in the greenhouse, from mid-May sheltered outside

  • Location: Sunny and warm

  • Soil: Nutritious, humus-rich and well-drained

  • Maintenance: Regularly pinch, tie up and fertilize

Because the fruits are very large, it is sometimes advisable to limit the number of tomatoes per truss to optimize quality and size.

Harvest and use in the kitchen

German Gold BIO is harvested in the mid- to late season. The fruits are harvested when the yellow color is intense and the red flames are clearly visible. Fully ripe, they reach their peak flavor and juiciness.

Culinary applications:

  • Perfect for salads

  • Excellent on bread and sandwiches

  • Ideal for tomato carpaccio

  • Delicious in fresh summer dishes

  • Suitable for hot preparations such as sauces.

Thanks to its mild flavour and firm flesh, German Gold BIO is versatile and very popular in Mediterranean cuisine.

Note

Indeterminate (trailing), and because of the weight of the fruit, it's essential to properly support the plant. To achieve an abundant and healthy harvest, side shoots (suckers) must be removed regularly, unless you choose a two-shoot cultivation (quite feasible for this variety).
