Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii 'Gigantea', also known as the Giant Lantern Plant, is a striking perennial known for its large, orange to red, lantern-like calyxes. These graceful calyxes enclose the fruit and give gardens, borders, and bouquets an exotic and colorful look, especially in late summer and autumn.

Characteristics of Physalis 'Gigantea'

  • Height: 80–120 cm, depending on growing conditions

  • Leaves: Dark green, coarsely serrated and decorative during the growing season

  • Flowers and calyxes: Small white flowers in summer, followed by large, orange-red lantern-like calyxes 6–8 cm

  • Fruits: Round, orange fruits that ripen within the calyxes; edible, but often used decoratively

Care and location

Physalis 'Gigantea' is easy to care for and grows well in a variety of garden conditions:

  • Soil: Well-drained, nutritious garden soil

  • Water: Water regularly, especially during dry periods; the plant is moderately drought tolerant.

  • Hardy: Hardy in most temperate climates; the above-ground parts die back, but the roots survive
