Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii 'Gigantea', also known as the Giant Lantern Plant, is a striking perennial known for its large, orange to red, lantern-like calyxes. These graceful calyxes enclose the fruit and give gardens, borders, and bouquets an exotic and colorful look, especially in late summer and autumn.
Height: 80–120 cm, depending on growing conditions
Leaves: Dark green, coarsely serrated and decorative during the growing season
Flowers and calyxes: Small white flowers in summer, followed by large, orange-red lantern-like calyxes 6–8 cm
Fruits: Round, orange fruits that ripen within the calyxes; edible, but often used decoratively
The striking calyxes are suitable for both garden decoration and dried flower arrangements. 'Gigantea' distinguishes itself with its larger lanterns compared to standard Physalis varieties.
Physalis 'Gigantea' is easy to care for and grows well in a variety of garden conditions:
Light: Sun to partial shade; full sun promotes the best color development of the calyxes.
Soil: Well-drained, nutritious garden soil
Water: Water regularly, especially during dry periods; the plant is moderately drought tolerant.
Hardy: Hardy in most temperate climates; the above-ground parts die back, but the roots survive
Spacing: Plant about 50–70 cm apart, as the rhizomes can spread
Propagation: By division of rhizomes in spring or sowing fresh seeds
Uses: Ideal for borders, naturalistic gardens, rock gardens or as a cut flower
Creates an impressive splash of colour in gardens from summer to autumn
Lantern-like calyxes are excellent for dried flower arrangements
Can be combined with autumn flowering plants such as asters and ornamental grasses
