The Philodendron selloum, also known as Philodendron bipinnatifidum, is an impressive tropical houseplant beloved for its large, deeply incised leaves and lush appearance. Ideal for indoors, a conservatory, or a covered patio, this plant instantly adds a tropical touch to any interior.
Leaves: Large, glossy and deeply cut; can grow up to 90cm wide
Color: Dark green, hardly changes shade with healthy growth
Size: Can grow 1–2 metres tall and wide indoors
Growth: Slow to medium growth rate; easy-care plant
The imposing leaves create a striking decorative effect and make Philodendron selloum a real eye-catcher in living rooms, offices or reception areas.
Philodendron selloum is easy to care for when the basic needs are followed:
Light: Bright, indirect light; avoid direct sunlight which can burn the leaves
Water: Keep the soil slightly moist, but not soggy. Allow the top layer of the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings.
Feeding: During the growing season (spring and summer) give a liquid houseplant fertilizer every 4–6 weeks
Temperature: 18–27°C is ideal; can tolerate short periods of cold, but prefers above 15°C
Humidity: Likes higher humidity; regular misting or a humidifier can help the plant stay thriving and healthy.
Philodendron selloum grows best in a light, well-draining potting soil. A mix of potting soil with peat, perlite, and coco coir works well. Repotting is necessary every 2–3 years, preferably in spring, so the roots have enough room to grow and the plant stays healthy.
Remove old or damaged leaves to keep the plant fresh and healthy
Pruning encourages new leaf growth and maintains the desired shape
Check regularly for pests such as spider mites and aphids, especially in dry indoor conditions
Philodendron selloum is not only a visually appealing plant but also has air-purifying properties. It can filter indoor air and add a sense of tranquility and a tropical ambiance to any interior. Its large, decorative leaves make it a perfect statement plant for corners, by windows, or alongside furniture.
