Passiflora edulis, commonly known as passion fruit, is a climbing species in the passion flower family, native to the southern part of South America.
A highly prized flower, the fruits grow to about 5 cm long and 4 cm wide and are edible. The fruit is purple and the flavor is fresh and sweet. The passion fruit can be cut in half and eaten with a spoon.
Passiflora edulis is self-pollinating; young plants produce their first flowers from the second year onwards. Fertilize Passiflora edulis regularly from spring and throughout the summer. Passiflora edulis flowers are pink/purple, fading to white.
The leaves are three-lobed and can reach a diameter of 20–25 cm. They grow on green, hairless stems that can reach over 8 meters in length. Pruning is a good way to keep passion flower in check. Passion fruit can easily overwinter in a cold greenhouse or on a windowsill. If the plant grows too large, excess foliage can be cut away; leave at least 30 cm or more. The plant will sprout again in spring. Hardiness: +5 ºC.
