Description

Nigella damascena 'Miss Jekyll Mixture' – Romantic Color Mix with Graceful Seed Pods

Nigella damascena 'Miss Jekyll Mixture', also known as the Lady-in-the-Green Mix, is a beloved summer annual that fills gardens with an airy, romantic look. This variety mix features flowers in various shades of white, light blue, dark blue, and sometimes soft pink or lilac. Thanks to this color spectrum, 'Miss Jekyll Mixture' creates a vibrant, playful ensemble that complements borders, cottage gardens, cutting gardens, and wildflower meadows perfectly.

Besides the graceful flowers, the decorative seed pods that appear after flowering are also characteristic of this plant. They are ideal for dried bouquets and flower arrangements and extend the ornamental value well beyond the summer.

Characteristics of Nigella damascena 'Miss Jekyll Mixture'

This annual grows to about 45–60 cm tall and has fine, wiry foliage that forms a cloud around the stems. This lacy foliage creates an elegant, almost floating appearance that blends harmoniously with other summer flowers.

The mix consists of various colours within the Miss Jekyll series, including:

  • White and cream

  • Sky blue to deep blue

  • Soft lilac and pastel pink

  • Combinations with subtle nuances

This creates natural variation and a playful look that can be different every day.

Bloom & growth

The flowering period runs from June to August, with the potential for a longer blooming period if spent flowers are regularly removed. If you want to save the characteristic seed pods, feel free to let the flowers fade.

Nigella is an easy, low-maintenance plant. Sow directly in the ground from April onwards, or earlier under glass in March. Because the plant doesn't like being transplanted, sowing in its final location works best. A sunny location and well-drained, not too rich soil promote compact growth and abundant flowering.

Once established, the plant is fairly drought-tolerant. Occasional watering during extended dry spells is sufficient. If you leave the seed pods undisturbed at the end of the season, Nigella will often self-seed, allowing the plant to return naturally every year.

Application in garden design

Nigella damascena 'Miss Jekyll Mixture' is versatile because of its natural, airy texture. Possible applications include:

🌿 Borders and perennial combinations – for color and texture among taller plants like larkspur, dahlias, or ornamental onions.
🌿 Cottage and cut flower gardens – ideal as cut flowers for fresh bouquets and dried flowers.
🌿 Flower meadows and nature gardens – attract bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
🌿 Dried flower applications – the seed pods retain their shape and color for a long time.

Its graceful, loose growth makes this mix a beautiful addition to cosmos, sweet pea, chamomile, yarrow, cornflowers, and poppies, creating a summery, vibrant planting full of movement and color.

Safety and use

Nigella damascena is non-toxic, safe for family gardens, and suitable for areas with pets. The seeds are primarily used ornamentally and have a mild, somewhat bitter flavor.
