Lilium candidum, better known as the Mary or Madonna lily, is a classic and particularly elegant lily species with a rich history. This majestic white lily is native to Lebanon and eastern Israel, although it is believed that the first specimens originated in the Balkans. The Romans brought this flower along as a symbol of victory, and later the Crusaders spread it further throughout Central and Western Europe. To this day, the Madonna lily symbolizes purity, beauty, and tradition.
The plant forms a sturdy flower stalk approximately 90 cm tall with scattered, lance-shaped leaves. Multiple impressive, broadly funnel-shaped flowers appear on each stalk, facing outwards. Under favorable conditions, a single stalk can bear up to twenty wonderfully fragrant white flowers. Notably, the first leaves often appear as early as autumn, causing the plant to develop early.
Lilium candidum blooms in July and looks its best in a sunny or partially shaded location. The bulbs are planted at a depth of 5 to 10 cm with a planting distance of approximately 15 to 20 cm. For a rich flowering effect, about 40 bulbs per m² are recommended. This lily is suitable for naturalizing and can also be planted excellently in pots. In addition, it is very popular as a cut flower thanks to its stately appearance and delightful fragrance.
The Madonna lily gives borders, classic gardens, and country plantings a timeless look. Combine it with perennials or ornamental grasses for a romantic effect. With its graceful form and historical charm, Lilium candidum is a valuable addition to any garden.
