Hypoestes phyllostachya is native to tropical Madagascar as a herbaceous perennial. There, it grows in shady locations in the understory of forests and rainforests, where it can form a dense carpet.
Hypoestes is very decorative as a houseplant and mixes beautifully with all colors. As an annual, it's also suitable for patio pots and flowerbeds.
