How are seeds made? A fascinating journey from flower to seed

October 14, 2025

Seeds are the building blocks of plant life. But how do they actually come about? Many people buy seeds in stores without realizing the remarkable processes that go into them. In this blog post, we'll take you step by step through the process of seed formation.

1. The basics: flowers and pollination

Seeds always develop from flowers. Flowers are the reproductive organs of plants and usually have male and female parts.

  • Male parts: The stamens produce pollen.
  • Female parts: The pistil contains the ovary, where the seed eventually develops.

The process begins with pollination, where pollen from the stamen lands on the pistil. This can happen by wind, water, or animals like bees and butterflies.

2. Fertilization: The Magic of Merging

After pollination, fertilization occurs. The pollen grows into a small tube that grows toward the egg cell in the ovary. Once the male and female parts fuse, a zygote is formed, the first step in seed formation.

3. Seed development: from zygote to seed

The zygote develops into an embryo, the future plant. At the same time, other parts of the seed are forming:

  • Seed coat: Protects the embryo from desiccation and damage.
  • Nutrient tissue: Provides reserve food so the seed can germinate when conditions are favorable.
  • Fruit: Often the ovary develops into a fruit, which helps disperse the seed.

During this phase, the seed stores nutrients and the seed coat hardens. The result is a fully developed seed ready to germinate.

4. Seed dispersal: the seed on the way

Plants have developed clever ways to spread their seeds. This can be done in several ways:

  • Wind: Dandelion seeds or winged maple seeds.
  • Water: Coconuts can float long distances across the sea.
  • Animals: Seeds with hooks attach to fur, or are eaten and later pooped out.
  • Self-propagation: Some plants “shoot” their seeds, such as lupine.

This spread allows the plant to establish itself over a large area and find new growing places.

5. The importance of seeds

Seeds are crucial not only for plant reproduction, but also for humans and animals. They are a source of food, oil, medicinal substances, and raw materials. Think of grains, beans, sunflower seeds, or nuts.
