Hosta Abiqua Drinking Gourd is a special and beloved hosta that immediately stands out due to its strongly cupped, blue-green leaves. The thick, heart-shaped leaves form deep cups, causing rainwater to collect within the foliage. It is precisely to this striking characteristic that this cultivar owes its name, Drinking Gourd. Furthermore, thanks to its sturdy leaf structure, this hosta is relatively resistant to slugs.
The plant forms compact to medium-sized clumps with a height of approximately 45 to 60 cm, while the flowering stems reach a height of about 70 to 80 cm. In summer, elegant, light lavender to almost white bell-shaped flowers appear, which stand out above the decorative foliage and beautifully complement the ornamental value of the plant.
Hosta Abiqua Drinking Gourd thrives best in partial shade to shade. In humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil, the plant develops its characteristic blue-green leaf color optimally. Thanks to the thick, waxy leaves, the plant remains attractive for a long time throughout the growing season and retains its beautiful appearance.
This hosta is excellently suited as a solitary plant, but also comes into its own beautifully in groups, shade borders, woodland gardens, or along ponds. The striking leaf shape creates a lovely contrast with fine-leaved ferns, Heuchera, Brunnera, Astilbe, and other shade plants. This cultivar is also a real eye-catcher in large pots or planters.
Hosta Abiqua Drinking Gourd is fully winter-hardy, low-maintenance, and returns larger and fuller every spring. This makes it an excellent choice for any garden enthusiast looking for a striking foliage plant with a unique appearance.
