Hordeum jubatum – Wagging Barley

Hordeum jubatum, known in the Netherlands as wagtail barley or ornamental barley, is a particularly decorative ornamental grass with striking, silky ears. The long, fine awns give the inflorescences an airy and almost plume-like appearance. When the ears move in the wind, a playful effect is created that makes Hordeum jubatum a beautiful addition to borders, prairie gardens, and natural plantings.

Hordeum jubatum forms compact clumps of narrow, green leaves. In summer, the characteristic spikes appear, which are initially greenish and can take on soft silvery, pink to light purple hues as they ripen. Sow Hordeum jubatum

Sowing Hordeum jubatum is easy. Sow the seeds directly in the desired location in the spring or sow them indoors first. Preferably choose a sunny spot with well-draining soil. Feverfew is relatively undemanding regarding soil requirements and is therefore suitable for various garden types.

The plant comes into its own particularly well when multiple specimens are planted in groups. This creates a natural undulating effect as soon as the wind sweeps through the ears.
