Description

A specialty from Ticino in Switzerland.

Gniff produces short, stubby carrots about 10–15 cm long. These short carrots are purple on the outside and white on the inside, and look very attractive when cut. The purple fades slightly when cooked. Gniff is very easy to store; as a late variety, it should be sown no later than early June. Thin it again later in the growing season, as it is very vigorous and produces abundant foliage.

Sow directly outdoors, sowing depth 0.5 cm. Row spacing: 30–40 cm, 6–8 cm within the row. To protect against carrot flies, choose open, windy locations or cover with netting. Do not apply fresh fertilizer. Carrots prefer sunny locations and light, well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Harvesting takes place from August to October.

Carrots should only be grown in the same spot every six years. They grow well alongside corn, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, and potatoes.
