Cucurbita pepo Spark F1 PMT is a striking and colorful F1 hybrid pumpkin variety that is both aesthetically pleasing and culinary. This small, bicolor variety combines a unique yellow-orange stripe pattern with compact, uniform fruits and strong, healthy growth. Spark F1 is particularly suitable for growers seeking a decorative pumpkin that is also suitable for culinary use, while its resistance to powdery mildew (PMT) ensures trouble-free cultivation.
Spark F1 stands out for its unique two-tone appearance. The fruits are yellow with dark orange stripes, creating a vibrant and striking look, ideal for decorative applications such as autumn arrangements, centerpieces, and market displays.
The fruits are:
flat-round in shape
lightly ribbed for a natural, graceful structure
approximately 10 cm in diameter, ideal handy size
uniform in size and color, which contributes to a consistent appearance
This combination of shape, colour and size makes Spark F1 suitable for both sales and for home cooks who want to use the pumpkin in small, aesthetic dishes.
Spark F1 is a vigorous, healthy variety. Thanks to its PMT resistance, the plant is protected against powdery mildew, a common fungal disease affecting many Cucurbita pepo varieties.
The benefits of Spark F1 for the grower include:
High yield per plant
Uniform, decorative fruits
Strong and compact growth
Little disease pressure during the growing season
These properties make Spark F1 ideal for both hobby growers and commercial cultivation where reliability and yield are key.
Although Spark F1 is primarily known for its ornamental appearance, the variety also has culinary uses. The fruit can be used in various dishes, such as:
pumpkin soup
roasted vegetables
casseroles
puree or fillings
The small, handy fruits are easy to portion and are perfect for modern, creative cooking applications.
Spark F1 has a ripening time of approximately 90 days, comparable to other main varieties of Cucurbita pepo. This ensures a reliable harvest and uniform fruit development, allowing growers to plan accordingly, both seasonally and commercially.
Like all Cucurbita pepo varieties, Spark F1 grows best in warm, well-drained, and fertile soil. There are two ways to sow:
Sow from the end of April, and plant out after the last frost.
Sow directly from early May, when the soil is sufficiently warm.
For optimal germination, a temperature of 24–30°C is ideal. The seeds should be placed pointed-side down or flat and kept slightly moist, but not wet. After germination, the seedlings should be placed in a bright, cooler location to promote strong, compact growth.
Spark F1 is a trailing variety that spreads throughout the season and requires sufficient space for optimal growth and fruit set. For healthy plant development, a growing area of 1–2 m² per plant is recommended. This space allows for good air circulation, reduces disease susceptibility, and promotes uniform fruit.
