Cucurbita pepo Skat F1 is a particularly attractive and decorative squash variety with a striking green color and a unique shape that immediately catches the eye. This F1 hybrid variety is distinguished by its firmness, good shelf life, and striking shape variations, with some fruits developing more pronounced "fingers" or segments. These characteristics make Skat F1 a favorite among ornamental growers, hobby gardeners, and anyone who appreciates unusual ornamental squashes.
Skat F1 is a patisson unlike any other. While many patissons are primarily white, yellow, or light green, this variety stands out with its deep to medium green color, which creates a beautiful contrast in autumn and late summer arrangements.
The fruit is flat and disc-shaped, like the typical pattypan squash, but some Skat F1 varieties have particularly pronounced fingers, ridges, or segments. This creates a playful, dynamic appearance that is particularly popular in the decorative sector.
The fruits reach a size of 15 to 20 centimeters, making them ideal for:
table centerpieces
autumn decorations
garden presentations
seasonal markets
flower arranging and styling projects
This variety is not intended for consumption, but purely as a decorative pumpkin.
A major advantage of Skat F1 is its surprising robustness. For a pattypan squash, this variety is exceptionally firm and keeps well, which is essential for commercial decorative pumpkins. The fruits remain beautiful for a long time, retain their shape and color, and are less susceptible to damage.
This makes Skat F1 ideally suited for:
sales to garden centers
decoration sales at autumn markets
use in arrangements that need to last for several weeks
Its strong skin and compact structure contribute to its long shelf life and make this variety attractive for intensive use.
With a ripening time of 80 to 85 days, Skat F1 is an early to mid-late patisson variety. This makes it well-suited to various climates and ensures a reliable harvest from summer into autumn.
The plant produces evenly shaped fruits and is known for its consistent performance throughout the growing season.
Like other Cucurbita pepo varieties, Skat F1 thrives in warm, well-drained, and fertile soil. You can choose:
sow from the end of April, followed by planting out when the weather is stable
sow directly from early May, as soon as the soil is sufficiently warm
For successful germination, a temperature of 24–30°C is ideal. Sow the seeds pointed side down or lay them flat. Keep the seedbed slightly moist, but avoid waterlogging—too much water hinders germination and increases the risk of mold.
After germination, it is important to place the young plants in a cooler, light place so that they continue to grow strongly and compactly.
Unlike many trailing pumpkin varieties, Skat F1 requires relatively little space. An area of about 1 m² per plant is usually sufficient. This makes this variety very suitable for:
smaller vegetable gardens
compact ornamental gardens
intensive cultivation in limited space
growers who want to plant many plants without using large plots
Even in pots or raised beds, a single plant can perform surprisingly well, provided there is sufficient warmth and nutrition available.
