Cucurbita pepo, Phat Jack, is an impressive and decorative Halloween pumpkin that makes an impression in both the garden and in creative applications. Weighing 10–12 kg (22–26 lb), Phat Jack is among the larger mini and standard pumpkins, making it a real eye-catcher in autumn decorations. This new, vigorous, and reliable variety combines beautiful color with solid stems, making it suitable for both decorative and partially culinary use.
Phat Jack stands out for its round, light-colored fruits and solid, firm flesh, which makes the pumpkin stable and durable. The variety has vigorous growth and strong vine development, resulting in a bountiful harvest of uniform, large fruits. Phat Jack is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a robust pumpkin with high ornamental value.
Fruit weight: 10–12 kg
Color: Slightly lighter orange, round in shape
Usage: Halloween decoration, partly kitchen
Maturation time: 120 days
Ranking behavior: Strong ranking
Planting distance: 3–4 m² per plant
Phat Jack's large, round fruits make it a perfect choice for Halloween decorations, autumnal scenes, and creative flower arrangements. The combination of beautiful, solid stems and robust fruits creates a professional and eye-catching look in any garden or at a market. Phat Jack also pairs well with other large pumpkin varieties, such as Wolf or Jack Straw, for a varied decorative effect.
The solid flesh makes pumpkins stable and less fragile, making them suitable for carving and art projects. Some of the harvest can also be used in the kitchen, for example, for pumpkin soup or savory dishes, although the primary focus is on decorative uses.
Phat Jack grows best in warm, well-drained soil. Seeds can be pre-sown from late April for an early start, or sown directly in the ground from early May. The optimal germination temperature is between 24–30°C. After germination, it's recommended to place the young plants in a brighter, cooler location to promote healthy development.
Sowing period: End of April for planting out or sow directly from the beginning of May
Sowing method: Place the pointed end of the seed downwards or lay it flat.
Seed moisture: Do not keep seeds too moist
Due to the strong vining habit of Phat Jack, sufficient space of 3–4 m² per plant is recommended to allow the plants to fully develop and achieve maximum yield.
With a ripening period of 120 days, Phat Jack is a late-ripening pumpkin, resulting in large, mature fruits that retain their beautiful orange color and round shape. The fruits are durable, firm, and have a long shelf life, making them excellent for long autumn and winter decorations.
