With a fruit weight of approximately 600–800 grams, Gills Golden Pippin is an ideal choice for both home cooks and home gardeners seeking a compact, fast-maturing, and flavorful squash.
Gills Golden Pippin is also one of the few yellow acorn squashes with a distinctive shape and a rich cultivation history. Thanks to its robust growth and high yield, this variety is beloved by gardeners of all levels.
This variety produces bright yellow, elongated acorn squash with an elegantly narrow profile. The fruits are compact yet very flavorful, known for their fine texture and slightly sweet aroma. Their size makes them ideal for:
to fill and roast,
to be used in casseroles,
to be used in autumn dishes,
or simply as a decorative addition to the kitchen or on the table.
The compact fruits are easy to handle and the perfect size for one- to two-person meals. This makes Gills Golden Pippin particularly popular with modern home cooks who appreciate flavorful, smaller pumpkin varieties.
Acorn squashes are known for their productivity and robust nature, and Gills Golden Pippin is no exception. Even in less than ideal conditions, the plants often produce a high yield. They are less demanding than many other squash varieties, making them suitable for beginner gardeners.
Its excellent flavour and compact size have made this variety a staple for many years in traditional kitchens and modern gardens that focus on flavourful, easy-to-grow varieties.
Gills Golden Pippin has a maturation time of approximately 90 days, making it a fast and reliable variety. Its growth pattern is moderately vining, allowing the plants to spread somewhat while remaining manageable in smaller gardens or raised beds.
Like all Cucurbita pepo varieties, this one grows best in heat-loving, well-drained soil. A sunny location promotes healthy growth and abundant fruit set.
Pre-sowing: from the end of April, indoors or in a greenhouse.
Direct sowing: from early May, as soon as the soil temperature is around 15 °C.
Optimal germination temperature: 24–30 °C for strong and rapid emergence.
Place the seed horizontally or with the pointed end down. Avoid overwatering—overly wet soil inhibits germination and can lead to seed rot. After emergence, it's best to move the young plant to a brighter, slightly cooler location, which will keep it firm and compact.
Acorn squash, including Gill's Golden Pippin, are known for being space-efficient. They require less growing space than most other squash varieties. Depending on their vine growth, a wide spacing is always desirable, but acorn squash generally remain undemanding and manageable.
For this moderately climbing variety, 1–1.5 m² per plant is usually sufficient for optimal growth and air circulation.
