The Cucurbita pepo Ghostrider is a highly prized pumpkin variety in both hobby and professional cultivation. This variety is known as a high-quality open-pollinated pumpkin, meaning it's very suitable for direct sowing and its characteristics are consistently passed on. With its robust growth, attractive fruits, and excellent yield reliability, Ghostrider is a favorite among growers seeking an affordable yet high-quality pumpkin for both decoration and processing.
Ghostrider produces tall, round, warm orange pumpkins weighing approximately 5 to 8 kilograms. The fruits are only slightly ribbed, making them particularly suitable for carving (Halloween pumpkins). Their smooth skin and uniform shape make them easy to hollow out and work, making them a favorite during the fall season.
The intense orange color also provides a decorative look that's ideal for sales purposes, markets, and agricultural fairs. Ghostrider combines visual appeal with practical properties, making the variety widely applicable.
A key advantage of Ghostrider is its open-pollinated nature. Unlike F1 hybrids, the purchase price per seed is lower, yet the plants still exhibit a high degree of uniformity. This makes Ghostrider particularly suitable for direct sowing in open ground, without the need for precise seeding. This makes the variety ideal for larger growing areas, schools, gardening associations, or allotments where simplicity and efficiency are desired.
The high reliability of the variety ensures stable emergence and consistent fruit development, even under varying growing conditions.
Ghostrider has a maturation time of approximately 90 days, making it ideal for an average growing season. The plants are moderately vining, meaning they develop tendrils but aren't excessively rampant. This keeps the plants manageable, even in smaller gardens or with more intensive cultivation schedules.
For optimal growth, 2–3 m² per plant is recommended, so that the tendrils have enough space to develop without competition between the plants.
Like all Cucurbita pepo varieties, Ghostrider grows best in warm conditions in airy, humus-rich, and well-drained soil. Cultivation can be started in two ways:
Sow from the end of April
Sow directly from early May as soon as the soil temperature is high enough
When sowing, a germination temperature between 24–30°C (75–86°F) is ideal for rapid and healthy emergence. Place the seeds with the pointed end down or horizontally in the soil. It's important not to keep the soil too wet, as this can lead to rot or mold growth. After germination, the plant can be placed in a cooler, brighter spot to promote strong, compact growth.
Although Ghostrider is primarily known as an excellent carving pumpkin, the variety is also suitable as:
Decorative pumpkin
Sales variety for farmers markets and vegetable stalls

The size, shape and uniform colour make the fruits attractive to both consumers and professional buyers.
