Description

Cucurbita pepo Cargo PMT F1 – Large, stable lantern pumpkin

The Cucurbita pepo Cargo PMT F1 is a vigorous F1 hybrid pumpkin that stands out for its large, stable fruits, compact growth, and resistance to powdery mildew (PMT). This variety is ideal for both professional growers and home gardeners seeking uniform, high-quality pumpkins with a classic orange color and firm texture. Cargo F1 PMT combines high yield with aesthetic perfection, making it suitable for both decorative and culinary uses, such as pumpkin soup.

Striking fruits: large, round and harmonious

Cargo F1 produces very round fruits with bright orange skin and only slight ribbing. The fruits average 9–12 kg (20–26 lbs), placing this variety in the large lantern pumpkin category. The harmonious appearance is enhanced by a sturdy, dark green stem, which is not only visually appealing but also contributes to improved shelf life and transport stability.

The fruits are stable and uniform, making them ideal for decorative uses, such as autumn and Halloween arrangements. At the same time, the flesh of Cargo F1 is suitable for consumption, for example, in soups, stews, and casseroles.

Compact growth and productive plant

The Cargo F1 PMT plant grows very compactly, making it easy to manage and suitable for intensive cultivation. On average, each plant produces two large, uniform fruits, ensuring a reliable harvest. The vines are moderate, allowing the plant to maintain sufficient air circulation and reducing the risk of fungal diseases such as powdery mildew. Thanks to its PMT resistance, the plant remains vigorous for longer and produces high-quality fruits throughout the growing season.

A recommended location of 1.5–2 m² per plant ensures optimal fruit development and a harmonious plant structure.

Cultivation and sowing method

Cargo F1 PMT grows best in warm, well-drained soil with ample sunlight. The following methods are recommended for successful cultivation:

  • Pre-cultivation from the end of April, followed by planting out after the last night frost

  • Sow directly from early May, as soon as the soil has warmed up sufficiently.

The optimal germination temperature is between 24–30°C. Sow the seeds with the pointed end down or flat and keep the soil moist to prevent rot. After germination, the young plants should be placed in a bright, cooler location to encourage strong, compact growth.

The ripening time is 95–100 days, making Cargo F1 PMT a mid-late variety suitable for autumn harvest.

Diseases and pests

Although Cargo F1 PMT is robust thanks to its powdery mildew resistance, it can be susceptible to common pests and diseases of Cucurbita pepo. Potential threats include:

  • Snails

  • Birds

  • Mice

  • Aphids

  • Mildew

  • Viruses

Good air circulation, ample planting distance and proper water management limit the risk of damage, allowing the fruits to retain their quality.

Uses and applications

The versatility of Cargo F1 PMT makes the breed suitable for various applications:

  • Decoration: Large, round lantern pumpkins ideal for fall and Halloween arrangements

  • Culinary applications: suitable for pumpkin soup, stews and oven dishes

  • Commercial sales: Uniform, large fruits are perfect for markets, farm shops or as a premium seasonal product

The combination of large fruits, compact growth and high uniformity makes Cargo F1 PMT a reliable choice for growers who value quality, yield and versatility.
