Solor is an improved selection of the well-known Uchiki Kuri breed.
Solor yields slightly better, but the fruits—which otherwise resemble the more common Hokkaido variety—can be stored for about 4–6 weeks longer. For this reason, Solor has already displaced the Uchiki Kuri variety among professional growers who store the fruits for later sale.
Maturation time: 90 days.
Solor ranks moderately.
Cucurbita maxima is generally robust and provides excellent nutrition. This variety thrives in warm, well-drained soil.
Pre-sow and plant by sowing from the end of April or direct sowing from the beginning of May.
Optimal germination occurs at 24–30°C. When sowing, hold the pointed end of the seed downward or lay it flat. Do not keep the seed too moist. After germination, place it in a bright, cool location.
For Solor we recommend 2–3 m² per plant.
Possible pests: snails, birds, mice, aphids, mildew, viruses.
