Description

Cucumis melo 'Sweet Granite' – Extra early and reliable melon

The Cucumis melo 'Sweet Granite' is an exceptionally early and reliable honeydew melon specifically developed for cooler, northern climates. This melon, which originated in the United States in the 1970s, is an excellent choice for gardeners in the Netherlands and Belgium who wish to successfully grow their own melons. Thanks to its early ripening and vigorous growth, the Sweet Granite is one of the most reliable varieties within the Cantaloupe type.

Extra early and reliable melon

The Sweet Granite is known as one of the earliest Cantaloupe melons available. This makes it particularly suitable for cultivation in temperate climates. Under good conditions, harvesting can take place as early as mid-July in warm regions.

The fruits are oblong to oval and weigh around 1 kilogram on average. During the ripening process, the rind changes from green to an attractive light orange color, which is a clear sign that the melon is ready to be harvested. The flesh is juicy, aromatic, and deliciously sweet – especially in sunny summers.

Location and cultivation

Melons are naturally heat-loving plants and require a sunny, sheltered spot to grow optimally. The Sweet Granite is slightly more forgiving in this regard than many other varieties, but remains dependent on sufficient warmth.

The plants have moderate vine growth and require approximately 1 to 2 m² of space per plant. Pre-cultivation is strongly recommended for successful cultivation:

  • Sow indoors from early April
  • Ideal germination temperature: 24–28 °C
  • Sow 1–2 seeds per pot
  • Keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid overwatering

After propagation, the plants can be planted out in a greenhouse or in the open ground as soon as temperatures permit (usually from mid-May). In outdoor cultivation, the use of mulch film is very effective in raising soil temperature and retaining moisture.

Growth and care

Although the Sweet Granite is relatively simple for a melon, cultivation still requires some gardening experience. Regular watering is important, especially during fruit development. At the same time, you must ensure that the roots do not remain too wet to prevent fungal problems.

A warm and sunny summer has a direct impact on the quality of the fruit. The more sun and heat, the higher the sugar content and therefore the sweeter the melon. In cooler summers, the taste remains pleasant, but slightly less intensely sweet.

Harvest and use

Harvesting takes place as soon as the rind turns a light orange color and the fruit emits an aromatic scent. The Sweet Granite is ideal as a refreshing summer snack, in fruit salads, or as part of savory dishes such as melon with ham. Thanks to its compact size, this melon is also practical to use and easy to portion.

Possible pests and diseases

Like other melons, the Sweet Granite can be susceptible to some pests and diseases:

  • Aphids (lice)
  • Mice
  • Powdery mildew

Good air circulation, sufficient sunlight, and healthy growing conditions help to limit problems.
