Cosmos bipinnatus 'Double Click Cranberries' is a spectacular annual that transforms any garden with its deep, wine-red flowers. This variety is distinguished by its fully double and semi-double flowers, reminiscent of dahlias or pom-poms, borne on delicate, fern-like stems.
Features of the 'Double Click Cranberries'
This vigorous grower often reaches a height of 90 to 120 cm. The flowers have an intense cranberry color that contrasts beautifully with the fresh, finely feathered green foliage. It's an ideal plant for the back of a border or as a focal point in a large pot on a sunny patio.
Sowing and Growing
For best results, start early in spring:
- Sowing indoors (March-April): Use peat-free potting compost and sow in a warm, light spot at around 20°C.
- Sow directly outdoors (May): As soon as the risk of night frost has completely passed, you can sow the seeds directly in the open ground.
- Prickling out: Thin the seedlings to a distance of about 30-40 cm so that they have enough room to grow outwards.
Care and Flowering
The 'Double Click Cranberries' blooms profusely from July until the first frost in autumn.
- Location: Choose a spot with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day and well-drained soil.
- Watering and feeding: Keep the soil moist, but avoid wet feet to prevent root rot. Feed with liquid fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season for maximum flowering.
- Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers. This encourages the plant to continuously produce new buds.
Application in the Garden and Vase
In a border, this cosmos combines beautifully with ornamental grasses, zinnias, or dark dahlias. It's also an excellent cut flower; the more you pick, the more the plant blooms. The deep red flowers last a long time in the vase and add a romantic touch to any bouquet.
