Description

Citrullus lanatus Crispeed F1 is a modern watermelon variety

Citrullus lanatus 'Crispeed F1' is a modern watermelon variety that excels in early ripening, reliability, and a deliciously sweet taste. This F1 hybrid belongs to the popular Crimson type , recognizable by its dark green rind with lighter stripes and juicy, reddish flesh. Thanks to its strong growth and good yield, this variety is highly suitable for both hobby gardeners and professional growers.

Early and reliable harvest

What makes the Crispeed F1 special is its short ripening time of approximately 75 to 80 days. This means you can enjoy your own watermelons relatively quickly, even in a temperate climate like the Netherlands or Belgium. The plants produce fruit weighing about 7 to 10 kilograms, with a beautiful round to oval shape.

The yield is stable and reliable, provided the plant receives sufficient heat and sunlight. The more hours of sunshine, the higher the sugar content – and therefore the sweeter the fruit. This makes the Crispeed F1 ideal for sunny summers, but also suitable for cultivation in a greenhouse to create optimal conditions.

Location and cultivation

Watermelons love warmth. For best results, choose a sunny, sheltered spot in the garden or grow the plants in a greenhouse. The plants have moderate vine growth and occupy approximately 1 to 2 m² per plant.

A successful crop begins with good preparation. It is strongly recommended to start with a pre-crop (fork propagation):

  • Sow indoors from early April
  • Temperature: 24–28 °C
  • Sow 1–2 seeds per pot
  • Keep the soil slightly moist, but not too wet

After propagation, the young plants can be planted out in the greenhouse or, provided conditions are warm enough, in the open ground from mid-May. For outdoor cultivation, the use of mulch film is recommended. This helps to warm the soil, retain moisture, and limit weed growth.

Care and growth

During the growth phase, the Crispeed F1 requires little complicated care, but warmth and sun remain crucial. Regular watering is important, especially during fruit formation, but prevent the roots from remaining too wet.

Additionally, it is wise to give the plants sufficient space so that the tendrils can develop properly. You can also support the fruit to prevent damage.

Possible pests and diseases

As with many crops, some pests may occur. Pay particular attention to:

  • Aphids (lice)
  • Mice (that can gnaw on the fruit)
  • Powdery mildew

By keeping the plants healthy and providing sufficient air circulation, you can prevent many problems.

Taste and use

Crispeed F1 fruits are known for their sweet, refreshing taste and juicy texture. Perfect for consumption on warm summer days, in fruit salads, or as a healthy snack. Thanks to the firm flesh, they are also suitable for transport and short-term storage.
