Known as Japanese thistle, it is a semi-hardy perennial plant. It grows to 50–150 cm tall and has spiky, deeply incised green leaves with upright stems.
The plant produces showy pink flower heads from summer to early autumn, attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. Unlike many other thistles, Cirsium japonicum less invasive and is often cultivated for ornamental and medicinal purposes.
Grows best in well-drained soil and in a sunny to partial shade spot, suitable for flower meadows and natural gardens.
For indoor and (warm) outdoor cultivation. Day-length neutral.
