The Brassica oleracea Optimist F1 – better known as Optimist F1 cauliflower – is a specially bred winter cauliflower that excels in both quality and reliability. This hybrid cauliflower was developed for a late harvest into December and can even survive the winter in mild climates for a spring harvest in March or April. This makes Optimist F1 an excellent solution for gardeners who want to extend their growing season and make optimal use of their soil during the colder months.
The Optimist F1 cauliflower stands out for its strong plant structure and excellent winter hardiness. The plants are robust and develop large, compact heads with a beautiful white color. Thanks to these characteristics, this variety is perfectly suited for overwintering – provided the winter isn't too harsh. In areas with mild winters, the plants generally survive without problems, although some loss may occur during prolonged frost. Nevertheless, the yield per square meter often remains high, thanks to the strong vitality of this F1 hybrid.
For successful cultivation of Brassica oleracea Optimist F1 it is important to adhere to the correct sowing and planting times.
Sowing: from the end of May to mid-July.
Planting out: as soon as the young plants are sufficiently developed, usually 4–6 weeks after sowing.
Harvest: in November/December or, after overwintering, from late March to early May of the following year.
The Optimist F1 winter cauliflower has a relatively long growing season and requires a location with rich, well-drained soil. Because cauliflower is a heavy feeder, it's essential to provide sufficient nutrients. Fertilizing with compost or organic fertilizer before planting promotes vigorous growth and firm heads. During the growing season, an additional application of nitrogen-rich fertilizer can help support development.
Cauliflower likes a sunny spot with plenty of moisture, but without prolonged waterlogging. Regular watering is especially important during the summer months to prevent the plants from drying out. To keep the cauliflower heads a beautiful white, the outer leaves can be folded over the head as soon as the head begins to form – this protects them from sunlight and discoloration.
The Optimist F1 combines strength with quality: even after a cold winter, the flower heads remain firm and flavorful. The result is a full, aromatic cauliflower that's ideal for both fresh consumption and refrigeration.
Whether you're an experienced vegetable gardener or a professional grower, Cauliflower Optimist F1 is a reliable choice. Thanks to its uniform growth, high yield, and excellent winter hardiness, it delivers excellent results even under less favorable conditions. This variety is also suitable for various growing regions in the Netherlands and Belgium, provided the soil is well-cared for and the plants receive sufficient nutrients.
