Description

Armeria maritima 'Splendens' (Laucheana)

Armeria maritima 'Splendens', also known as English grass or Laucheana, is a compact, evergreen perennial loved for its abundant flowering and hardy, low-maintenance character. This graceful rock plant forms dense clumps of narrow, grey-green, grass-like foliage from which elegant flower stalks emerge starting in spring, bearing striking, spherical flowers in an intense pinkish-red to deep pink colour.

Flowering begins in May and can continue until September, depending on weather conditions and care. With a height of approximately 15 to 30 cm, Armeria maritima 'Splendens' is an excellent choice for rock gardens, dry stone walls, gravel gardens, borders, and as edging. This plant also comes into its own beautifully in cottage gardens, where it provides a colorful accent between natural stone and walls.

Originally, Armeria maritima grows along the European coast and is known for its excellent resistance to salty sea winds, drought, and severe frost. As a result, English grass is particularly suitable for coastal areas, but also for dry, sunny inland gardens. This hardy plant feels perfectly at home even along roads where road salt is used in winter.

Armeria maritima 'Splendens' grows best in a sunny location in well-drained, preferably poor or sandy soil. Once established, the plant requires hardly any maintenance. Regularly removing spent flowers encourages long-lasting and abundant flowering. In addition, the nectar-rich flowers attract plenty of bees, bumblebees, and butterflies, making this perennial a valuable contribution to a natural and insect-friendly garden.

Are you looking for an evergreen, profusely flowering, and extremely hardy perennial that is highly resistant to drought, frost, and saline conditions? Then Armeria maritima 'Splendens' (Laucheana) is an excellent choice for any sunny garden.
