Description

Allium schoenoprasum 'Forescate' is a special selection of the well-known chives, combining ornamental value with practical use in the kitchen. The name schoenoprasum is derived from the Greek word schoenus, meaning "rush," and prasum, meaning "garlic." The cultivar name 'Forescate' refers to the Latin word for Voorschoten, the place from which this selection derives its name. This cultivar distinguishes itself by its more vigorous growth and strikingly bright flower color.

Compared to common chives, Allium schoenoprasum 'Forescate' grows more robustly and profusely. The plant reaches a height of approximately 35 centimeters and forms compact clumps with fine, grass-like foliage. In June and July, decorative flower heads appear with luminous, bright pinkish-red flowers. The spherical inflorescences consist of many small, star-shaped flowers that together create a cheerful and colorful effect in the garden. The intense flower color makes this selection particularly attractive in borders, herb gardens, and natural plantings.

In addition to its ornamental value, 'Forescate' is also excellent as a culinary herb. The aromatic leaves can be used in salads, soups, and other dishes, just like common chives. This allows the plant to combine decorative qualities with practical applications. Occasionally, seedlings with a lighter, paler flower color may appear. To preserve the strong color of the cultivar, it is best to remove these seedlings.

Allium schoenoprasum 'Forescate' grows well in a sunny location but also tolerates light partial shade. The bulbs or clumps are planted about five centimeters deep with a spacing of approximately five centimeters between them. For a nice, dense effect, about sixty plants per square meter are recommended. The plant is resistant to deer and rodents and is also suitable for naturalization.

Although the flowers are not fragrant, they attract many bees and butterflies. Thanks to the combination of graceful flowers, vigorous growth, and culinary use, Allium schoenoprasum 'Forescate' is a versatile and attractive plant for any garden.
