Description

Allium triquetrum, also known as triangular garlic, is an elegant and highly naturalizing allium species that has been known in cultivation since 1789. The plant owes its name to the striking triangular flower stalk, a distinctive feature that is immediately noticeable when the plant is in bloom. Naturally, Allium triquetrum occurs in the Mediterranean region, but the species has also adapted excellently to more northerly areas, including parts of England. Due to its vigorous growth and natural appearance, this allium is popular as a woodland plant and suitable for naturalizing in woodland gardens and natural borders.

Depending on the location, the plant reaches a height of approximately 30 to 40 centimeters. The narrow leaves are grooved and have a slightly curled shape. They enclose the characteristic triangular flower stalk, giving the plant a playful and elegant appearance. In May, the slightly nodding flower heads appear, containing dozens of bright white flowers. The flowers are tubular to bell-shaped, and each petal features a fine green stripe. This subtle detail gives the flowers extra depth and refinement.

Allium triquetrum grows well in both sunny locations and light partial shade. The bulbs are planted approximately 5 to 8 centimeters deep with a planting distance of about 5 centimeters. For a natural and abundant flowering effect, about one hundred bulbs per square meter are recommended. The plant naturalizes very easily and can spread rapidly. Under favorable conditions, the species can even become aggressive.

A distinctive feature of Allium triquetrum is the light fragrance of the flowers. Additionally, the inflorescences attract many bees and butterflies and contribute to a biodiverse garden. Moreover, the plant is highly resistant to deer and rodents.

With its elegant white flowers, characteristic triangular stems, and strong natural growth habit, Allium triquetrum is a charming and striking ornamental onion that fits perfectly into natural and shady garden plantings.
