Allium 'Ostara®' is a special ornamental onion that stands out for its perfect balance between flower size, plant height, and foliage quality. This cultivar originated from a cross between Allium karataviense and Allium atropurpureum. Both parent species passed on their best characteristics: the decorative foliage of A. karataviense and the intense dark purple flower color of A. atropurpureum. The result is a compact yet striking ornamental onion that takes an elegant place in borders, rock gardens, and container plantings.

The name 'Ostara®' refers to the Anglo-Saxon spring goddess Eostra. Ostara symbolizes the moment when day and night are of equal length and nature returns to balance. This idea of ​​harmony and equilibrium is clearly reflected in the plant itself. With a height of approximately 40 centimeters and a richly filled flower head, this allium has a very balanced and compact growth habit.

Flowering takes place in May and June. During this period, beautiful spherical flower heads appear in an intense purplish-red color. The flowers stand out beautifully against the broad, decorative foliage, which remains attractive for a remarkably long time, even during flowering. This is unusual, as the foliage of many ornamental onions begins to die back early. It is precisely the beautiful foliage that makes Allium 'Ostara®' particularly attractive as an ornamental plant.

The plant grows well in a sunny location but also tolerates light partial shade. The bulbs are planted about 10 centimeters deep with a planting distance of approximately 15 centimeters. For a rich flowering effect, about thirty bulbs per square meter are recommended. Although the plant is not fragrant, it attracts many bees and butterflies, thereby contributing to a lively garden.
