Allium nigrum is an elegant and historic ornamental onion that was described as early as 1762. The species originates from the Mediterranean region and owes its name to the numerous black bulbils found in the wild form. Despite the name, it is primarily the bright white flowers that stand out, giving this allium a refined and airy appearance in borders and natural gardens.

The plant forms sturdy flower stalks that reach a height of approximately 70 to 80 centimeters. On top of these stalks, semi-spherical flower heads with a diameter of about 10 centimeters appear in June. The inflorescences consist of dozens of small white flowers with a subtle grayish sheen. The flowers sit on strikingly long green flower stalks of about 6 to 8 centimeters, creating an open and graceful effect. This gives the inflorescence an almost floating appearance above the foliage.

The foliage of Allium nigrum also has decorative value. The broad, glossy leaves lie partly on the ground and form a beautiful contrast with the upright flower stalks. The plant grows best in a sunny location but also tolerates light partial shade. Almost any well-drained soil is suitable. The bulbs are planted approximately 10 centimeters deep with a planting distance of 15 to 20 centimeters. For a rich flowering effect, an average of thirty bulbs per square meter is recommended.

Allium nigrum is fragrant, but it attracts many bees and butterflies, thereby contributing to biodiversity in the garden. Furthermore, the plant is highly resistant to deer and rodents. This ornamental onion is suitable for naturalization and can slowly spread under favorable conditions.

In addition, Allium nigrum is an excellent cut flower. The flowers remain beautiful in vases for a long time and are appreciated for their elegant shape and fresh appearance.
