Allium 'Miami®' is a striking and characterful ornamental onion known for its distinctive flower shape and rich purplish-red color. This cultivar was introduced by AW Duivenvoorden in 2011 and has since been considered one of the more exclusive alliums for enthusiasts of unique garden plants. The plant distinguishes itself with its sturdy flower stalks and decorative inflorescence, which attracts much attention both in the garden and in bouquets.
During the breeding of Allium 'Miami®', Allium atropurpureum almost certainly played an important role as one of the parent species. The influence of this species is clearly visible in the deep purplish-red flower color and the robust structure of the plant. Allium schubertii is presumably the second parent. The characteristics of this spectacular species become particularly visible during flowering. As the flowers open further, the inflorescence becomes looser and more playful in form, giving the flower head an almost fireworks-like effect.
The semi-circular inflorescence is slightly flattened at the base and consists of many glossy, star-shaped flowers in warm purplish-red shades. During flowering, the heads subtly change structure, adding extra dynamism to the border. The sturdy stems make this cultivar particularly suitable as a cut flower. The flower heads retain their decorative appearance for a long time, whether fresh or dried.
Allium 'Miami®' thrives best in a sunny location in well-drained soil. The plant combines beautifully with ornamental grasses, perennials, and other ornamental onions. Thanks to its striking flower shape, this allium is a real eye-catcher in modern borders, prairie plantings, and natural gardens. Furthermore, the flowers attract many bees and other pollinating insects, contributing to a lively garden environment.
With its robust growth, unique flower structure, and intense purplish-red color, Allium 'Miami®' is a special ornamental onion that uniquely combines elegance and playfulness.
